Do Ultraviolet Air Treatment Systems Work?

We're getting a new furnace, and our Hvac company is including a $684 quote for a Honeywell bacteria cleaning ultraviolet air treatment system. This device claims to kill airborne bacteria that goes through our vents as it passes by ultraviolet lights. Do these work and are they worth the additional cost?
