Does It Make Any Sense To Run Air Purifier With The Windows Open, If My Main Concern Is Pollution From Outside

I live in a very polluted Chinese city and think an air purifier would help keep my lungs AND my house cleaner. I'm not sure, though, having my windows closed all the time is a good idea either. Thank you for taking your time to share your suggestions.
