Why does my Ionic Breeze spark? Is it dangerous?

We have an Ionic Breeze Quadra that's about four years old. The other day I was laying on the couch and I saw sparks come off of it? We clean the filter often and have no other problems. My husband thinks that it started doing that because the dog has knocked it over a couple of times. Any thoughts?
